4 Great First Date Movies

Your first date should be relaxing and comfortable. Some movies help set that pace for your relationship.

There are so many rules about first dates, it can be difficult to know whose advice to follow. When it comes to picking a movie to watch for a first date, there are even more rules. From the standard “never watch a sad movie on a first date” rule (which I think is bogus) to the first date movie suggestions you get from friends, you may find yourself really confused about how to match your first date to the perfect film.

Here are four great first date movies. You can’t go wrong with any of these picks. All four are date-tested and approved by yours truly and the women who watched these first date flicks with me.

1. When Harry Met Sally

You might think that a movie about a romance, from beginning to end to new beginning, may not be first-date material. After all, some of the themes in the movie are a little heavy for a young romance, and you don’t necessarily want your date thinking about long-term romance right out of the gate. But When Harry Met Sally is a first-date winner because it is hilarious, men and women tend to agree that it’s a great movie, and it provides lots of opportunities for romantic conversation later on.

2. Back to the Future

Depending on your age, and the age of your date, watching Back to the Future on your first date will either be a fun romp through a classic film of your youth or a brand-new experience of one of the great movies of the 1980s. In other words, whether or not you or your date have seen this film before, you should have a great time watching it together. Comedies are perfect for first dates, and Back to the Future is full of laugh lines.

3. The Wizard of Oz

If you’re a classic movie fan and want to weed out any dates that may not share your interest, screen The Wizard of Oz. If your date falls asleep, complains about the movie, or just doesn’t seem that into you, it’s okay to blame this Judy Garland classic. But people overlook the romance woven into the story of Oz, and I’ve had more than a few first dates featuring this film that ended in some cozy under-the-blanket snuggling. Something about The Wizard of Oz makes people comfortable, so if you are afraid of tension on your first date, this could be the perfect antidote.

4. Anything Starring Morgan Freeman

I’ve discovered, through two decades of first dates, that pretty much any movie starring Morgan Freeman makes for a great date flick. One bonus to this rule is that Freeman is in pretty much every movie made in the 90s, so you have lots of flicks to choose from if you want to make Mr. Freeman your first date movie choice. Something about Morgan Freeman’s voice is comforting, and there are few Morgan Freeman movies that will bore your date. Morgan Freeman is a comforting presence, like a friendly grandfather, and I’ve found that his presence on the screen always leads to a relaxed first date. Don’t believe me? Try out The Shawshank Redemption or Driving Miss Daisy on your next first date and see for yourself the magic of movie date nights with Morgan Freeman.
