I was inspired to write this post when I read this article about whether or not Netflix is worth the money.

Watching a movie can now as simple as reviewing a menu, choosing a title, and pressing a button. The number of good movies to stream on Netflix is now so numerous that the hardest part may be choosing which one to watch.

Singles is a film about a group of 20-somethings in Seattle, trying to find their way in the world. Beyond the actual plot, this is a film that contains a bit of nostalgia for everyone who is a member of Generation X. The film was released in 1992, at the height of grunge music’s popularity, and there is evidence of that during the whole movie. The music of classic grunge bands, such as: Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, and Alice in Chains is featured. An icon of grunge, Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, even appears in the movie.

My Cousin Vinny features Marissa Tomei in her breakout role. New York lawyer Vinny (Joe Pesci) is called on to help a cousin accused of holding up a convenience store. Where does the comedy come in? The relative is in jail in rural Alabama, and Vinny has never tried a case before. Tomei received an Oscar for her portrayal of his girlfriend, Mona Lisa Vito.

Last Chance Harvey stars Dustin Hoffman as Harvey Shine, a middle-aged man who is unsure of where his life is going. He is a semi-successful jingle writer with a grown daughter. However, his boss is increasingly demanding and unsatisfied with Harvey’s work. He makes a huge effort to be in London for his daughter’s wedding, yet she seems to not want him there. While in London he meets Kate (Emma Thompson), who shows him that there can be wonderful surprises even later in life.

In Notting Hill, superstar actress Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) and bookstore owner William Thacker (Hugh Grant) have a chance meeting and fall in love. The improbable couple constantly has to deal with the difficulties Anna’s fame causes in their relationship. Also appearing in the film are acclaimed British actress Emily Mortimer and Irish comedian Dylan Moran.

One of the areas of Netflix streaming that particularly shines is their children’s programming. There are many good movies to stream on Netflix that are appropriate for children of any age, as well as many children’s television series.

Annie is the classic movie about an orphaned girl and her dog, Sandy. With big musical numbers that even children will love, this is a rags-to-riches story that everybody in the family can enjoy.

The Muppets Take Manhattan is the story of Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and the cast of the Muppet Show in their quest to bring their musical review to Broadway.

Good Documentaries to Watch on Netflix

Cropsey is a chilling story centering around a shuttered mental institution, missing children, and the murder of a young girl. A transient is eventually convicted for murder, but is he responsible for the disappearances of the other children?

It Might Get Loud is a collection of interviews with three generations of musicians — Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, the Edge of U2, and Jack Black of the White Stripes. It follows the Edge as he visits his high school, where the band mates of U2 first met. Jimmy Page is shown at home, going through his record collection. In perhaps the most interesting part of the film, Jack Black makes a guitar by hand while being interviewed. At the culmination of the film, all three musicians get together for a jam session.
